A 6th Grade Curtis Girls Soccer Team celebrates their championship win in the winter season of 2013-14, along with Coach Rio Saken and Headmaster Smailes. For 100 years, Curtis students have enjoyed and benefited from the school’s requirement of daily physical education in all grades. From its very first year of operation, Curtis had a vibrant physical education program supported by the philosophy of “Everybody in the game!” Championship competitions in swimming, boxing, gymnastics, and other sports were highlights of the year. Hundreds of Curtis students trained for and competed in individual and team efforts for ribbons, medals, and trophies, and the events were advertised in newspapers and celebrated with much fanfare.
Today, competitive athletics begins in Grade 4, and Curtis teams play against peer schools that belong to the San Fernando Valley Private School League. Competitive sports teaches children about teamwork, leadership, compassion, and winning and losing with grace—lessons they carry into adulthood. The experience our students have in the Curtis P.E. and athletics program is among the favorite memories of many of our alumni.
