From its beginnings, Curtis School was conceived as an academic school with an hour of daily required physical education, putting in practice the expressed purpose of developing young people with strong minds in strong bodies. Gymnastics were part of the physical education program since the school’s inception. During the years at Beverly Place, students performed an annual Gym Show that included acrobatics as well as a work on a variety of gymnastic apparatus. In this photo dating from the 1940s, students use stall bars to develop strength and balance.
