Boxing was taught in the physical education curriculum for boys at the first (Beverly Boulevard) and second (Beverly Place) campuses, with emphasis on careful training in correct technique. Carl F. Curtis, who had a degree in Physical Education from Harvard University, was the boxing and wrestling instructor at his uncle’s school. In this photo, taken circa 1947, he is seen coaching fledgling pugilists at his Beverly Place campus, within an actual roped boxing ring constructed on the pavement of the playground.
