From the very beginning, swimming has been been a central element of Curtis’s athletic and physical education program. The Carl Curtis School boasted a large, beautiful, indoor heated swimming pool. All students swam three times a week and were required to learn to swim a proper American Crawl. "Watermanship" taught at the school involved more than swimming; it included diving, life-saving, and games such as water polo. Swimming was the favorite sport of Curtis students in the 1920s and 1930s. The academic day school students and students attending only the after-school program competed fiercely for the title of school champions.
