Why DEI Matters in Elementary

Diversity, equity, and inclusion speak to our highest ideals for a just society. The Parents Group on Inclusivity supports the school’s critical work to develop a school community that strives to live these values daily in their interactions with others.
Parents heard from a panel of highly respected local secondary school educators about why an elementary school curriculum that includes identity development and the development of cultural competency skills, like Curtis School’s, is so important from the perspective of secondary schools.

Guest panelists Janine Hancock Jones (Director of Diversity, Equity and Inclusion, Harvard-Westlake School), Dr. Kevin Newman (Assistant Head of School and Director of Collegiate Division, Windward School; Curtis alumnus ’83; Curtis Trustee) and Dr. Priscilla Sands (Head of School, Marlborough School; Curtis Trustee) delivered powerful and inspiring insights in a moderated discussion and took a number of questions from our energized parent group.
PGI provides a forum for all Curtis parents and guardians to explore topics related to diversity, equity and inclusivity and offers the opportunity to focus on what we can do to teach our children how to value people in every dimension, including race, class, gender, religion, ability, and more.
