A new program for students in the Makerspace, Maker Days is inspired by the TV Show Making It and gives students the opportunity to invent, imagine, tinker and build using a variety of simple materials, problem-solving and creativitiy.
The first Maker Day activity, tying in with CurtisFest 2018, this year's Fair theme, was to make pan flutes. Students grabbed handfuls of colored straws from bins scattered through throughout the Makerspace, cut them in graduated lengths and arranged them accordingly. A couple of pieces of masking tape and stickers for decoration finished the job. Then came the fun of learning to direct air through their flutes to produce sound. Some students passed on the tip that keeping the flute slightly in front of the lips was the trick to coaxing the soft notes out of their instruments.
