Johnnisha Youngblood - Former Associate Teacher

DESTINATION: NEW ZEALAND

I am approaching my second year at Curtis as an Associate Teacher in the Lower Elementary division. I am so excited and honored to be a recipient of a travel fund grant this year. I graduated with a Master of Arts degree in teaching from the University of Southern California. Prior to joining the faculty at Curtis, I worked with middle school students on prose writing. I taught English in Oaxaca, Mexico, in 2010, and since then, I have been interested in traveling and exploring new cultures.

In August, I will be traveling to New Zealand to volunteer with a coastline conservation program. I am most looking forward to seeing the natural beauty of Auckland and exploring Otara Market, the world’s largest Polynesian market. In addition, I am planning day trips to locations including the volcanic island of Rangitoto and Woodhill Forest and to discover the city’s early history on the Tamaki Hikoi—a Maori-guided walk. Ultimately, I hope to bring back to the classroom stories and artifacts of the cultures I observe and knowledge about conservation tactics.
