Alumni Council Tapped Envision School's Future

The Alumni Council members met as a group with Romayne Levee and Carley Croom of Doing Good Marketing to contribute to the school's ongoing strategic planning initiative, "Envision Our Future." Participants in a variety of constituencies are being asked to imagine Curtis School in the year 2030 and to brainstorm and share their thoughts about what teaching and education should be at Curtis in order to carry forward our mission.

Specifically, the Alumni Council was asked to imagine: "In our school's future ...
  • What are we doing to ensure the intellectual fitness of young MINDS?
  • What are we doing to ensure the physical wellness of young BODIES?
  • What are we doing to inspire compassion and empathy in young HEARTS?
Input from the Alumni Council will be incorporated with surveys, interviews and information gleaned from sessions with other Curtis constituencies as our strategic plan takes shape. To learn more about this important work, please visit the "Envision Our Future" page on this site.

First Community Service Grant Awarded

Last spring, the Alumni Council created a grant opportunity for young alumni in grades 9-12 to support their community service work. The Curtis Community Service Award provides a stipend for one alumnus or alumna to benefit a summer community service project. This opportunity was initiated in order to recognize and promote the spirit of philanthropy of our alumni in the Los Angeles area.

The first year's award of $500 was presented to Whitney Elson (Curtis '13; HW '19) to support the work of Upward Bound House, which provides homeless families with tenporary housing and other resources to help them get into permanent housing. Whitney notes: "The kids living in Upward Bound House often have led tough lives. I work with the organization's Teen Corps to create a week-long summer camp for the kids, entirely free, so they can bond and have some fun." Whitney used the grant to improve the summer camp experience, creating new activities and field trips for the children and providing them with school supplies for the fall.
