American Mathematics Competition 8

5th and 6th grade Curtis students participated once again this year in a nationwide annual math contest, the American Mathematics Competition 8 or AMC8. Open to students in 8th grade and below, the AMC8 is a 25-question, 40-minute, multiple choice examination in middle school mathematics that is designed to exercise students’ mathematical muscles and problem-solving skills.
This year was the first time our students took this contest online and it was a new experience for all involved. Undeterred, 74 of our 5th and 6th grade students challenged themselves on this demanding test. (See images of sample questions.)

We recognized all our the test taking students’ efforts recently at flag, and the top scorers, answering 13 (first place-one 5th grader), 12 (second place-two 5th and three 6th graders) and 11 (third place-four 6th graders) questions correctly, received certificates for their achievements.

We congratulate all of our mathletes for their competitive spirit and achievements. Many thanks go out to Terra Shirvanian, our 6th grade math teacher, who coordinates this opportunity for our students to challenge themselves in math each year.
