The 'Yale Spizzwinks(?)' Visit Curtis

On the very first day after Winter Break the Upper Elementary students and a number of faculty and staff were treated to an unforgettable performance by the 'Spizzwinks(?),' the oldest underclassman a cappella group in the United States, founded in 1914. The singers visited Curtis as part of the Los Angeles stop on its hometown concert tour. The Spizzwinks(?)’s stay in Los Angeles was for baritone Brendan Rose, a junior at Yale University and Curtis graduate of the Class of 2011. The group delighted us with a full concert on the Pavilion stage that included, among other popular tunes, a beautifully harmonized rendition of The Beatles’s Blackbird, a particular favorite of the students. The next day, the Spizzwinks(?) showed up before school for Curtis Choir practice, where they again sang, talked about their group, answered students’ many burning questions, and encouraged them to stick with their music, whether vocal or instrumental. It was great having Brendan back on campus, and the visit was over much too soon. We hope the Spizzwinks(?) will make another stop at Curtis in the future so we can again see them perform their musical magic!
