Don't Hide It, Flaunt It!

For the past two years, Curtis has hosted as a speaker the founder of the non-profit organization Don’t Hide It, Flaunt It (DHIFI), Meg Zucker, to talk to our students about visible and invisible differences that all of us have and how they make us who we are. The organization’s Kids Flaunt educational program teaches children empathy and to accept, embrace and celebrate their own and others’ differences.

This year, the Don’t Hide It, Flaunt It assembly for 4th and 5th grades was opened by Interim Director of Grades 3-5 Ginger Healy, who framed the presentation by sharing that she is biracial and that, as a child, she grew from feeling different from other children who had one racial identity to embracing and celebrating her own identity. Unlike previous years, this year’s assembly was led by a group of our own Curtis students who are Junior Ambassadors for DHIFI. The mission of Junior Ambassadors is to represent DHIFI and promote its message “Don’t Hide It, Flaunt It.” Several of these students talked about their own visible and invisible differences and how the Kids Flaunt program has helped them accept and be proud of the differences that make them, them. Students watched a video about DHIFI that included stories told by other children about how the Kids Flaunt program has helped them embrace their own differences and feel more comfortable in themselves and accepted by their peers, and another video with messages from Meg Zucker, Miss America 2019 Nia Franklin, and others about DHIFI, the Kids Flaunt Contest and other DHIFI programs.

Thank you to our Curtis students who led this inspiring assembly and who proudly shared their differences and the DHIFI message of acceptance, mutual respect, and celebration of difference. Their message to the 4th and 5th grades supports Curtis’s mission to develop compassionate hearts in our students and upholds the critical values of diversity, equity and inclusion to which we are committed.
