    Happy Valentine’s Day! It’s that time of year again—time to pen my annual valentine to one of the loves of my life, math. I can hear it now―a chorus of groans and a chorus of cheers! Many of you have heard me go on about how I find mathematics to be one of the most elegant and beautiful stories of civilization. I can see the thought bubbles: “‘Elegant and beautiful’ are not the words that come to mind when I think about 10th grade trigonometry.” “I hated calculus in college!” “The only thing I remember is a2 + b2 = c2 —but, what’s that for again?”

    Dear Curtis Families,
     
    Happy New Year! I hope that you heeded the advice in my December message to unplug a bit over the last two weeks. I definitely did and really savored my time with Philip. We enjoyed many sunrises together; I learned that “sleeping in” during vacation doesn’t exist in a 14-month-old’s world. Now, fully recharged, I am savoring the return of the joyful and industrious sounds on campus of our Cougar students running, laughing, singing, playing, reading, asking and learning.
