3rd Annual Curtis Cares Day

On our 3rd Annual Curtis Cares Community Service Day, Curtis families, faculty and staff grew their Curtis compassionate hearts by participating in a number of service projects intended to benefit initiatives and non-profits that help others in the greater Los Angeles community and beyond. Curtis families turned out in force, bringing grandparents, younger children, and alumni children. With willing hands and hearts, they rolled up their sleeves and jumped into a number any of several planned efforts.

One of the core elements of this day of service is Curtis School’s Families Helping Families program, now in its 26th year of partnership with One Voice. Our Curtis families packed up the items their class collected for the One Voice family it was paired with. They filled and decorated tubs and boxes loaded with household supplies, clothing items and toys and included messages of love and friendship.

Other projects included braiding and knotting strips of recycled t-shirts to make pet toys for No-Kill LA (NKLA), assembling shower kits for clients of Saban Community Clinic, and fashioning paracords for U.S. service men and women as part of Operation Gratitude. One busy work station saw children decorating flowerpots with happy messages and then filling them with snapdragon plants for residents of a senior living center.

This year, Curtis Cares Community Service Day included our first annual e-waste recycling event in partnership with Homeboy Industries (certified as an R2 (Responsible Recycling) and B-Corp (Benefit Corporation)). Many people took advantage of the opportunity to drop off small electronics, computers and peripherals to be disposed of in a way that will keep the earth a little cleaner and greener. By the end of the morning, three large recycling bins were filled with e-waste that will not end up in a landfill.

Our community also contributed to campus improvements. Children and parents worked to renew the school’s Monarch Butterfly Garden by weeding and planting milkweed, the butterfly larvae’s food plant. And, they tackled the tough task of cleaning up the Pavilion Garden to help prepare it for its future as a vegetable garden.

We thank everyone who contributed to this special day in our school calendar and what has become a joyful and inspiring “new” Curtis tradition.
