Drew Beckmeyer - Art Teacher (4-6)

DESTINATION: JAPAN

Beckmeyer, the 4th-6th grade Upper Elementary Art Teacher, will be traveling through Japan to explore past and present design principles in art and architecture and visual arts education.

This is my 6th year working at Curtis, and my 4th year as the Upper Elementary Art Teacher. Prior to finding Curtis and interspersed since, I have done illustration and design work for a variety of publications and companies, and my personal work has been shown across the country.

I am going to Japan in order to explore the links between centuries of austere design history and the bombast of current trends. Going from Tokyo, through several cities and ending in Hiroshima, I am interested in what I see as a creative culture of extremes, and how those extremes have played out culturally in the long-term. My hope is to bring back an in-depth understanding of traditional Japanese art as well as the methods that are being used to currently address creativity in a culture that, like our own, sees it fading.
